Almost every aspect of technology that we use every day, from browsing the internet, sending emails, to playing online games, involves the role of\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>servers<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0. Even so, not everyone understands\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>what a server is<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0, how it works, and\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>the function of a server<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0in a computer network. This article will discuss in depth\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>the meaning of a server<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0, its function, how it works, and the types of servers that are often used.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\"><strong><span>Understanding Servers<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span>A server is<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0a hardware or software that serves to serve requests from other devices called\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>clients<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0in a network. Servers are usually placed in data centers or in safe places and are designed to handle many requests simultaneously from various clients. Servers can be powerful physical computers and have large capacities to perform heavy tasks in a network, such as data storage, processing, and distribution.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span>In a broader context,\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>the meaning of server<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0can also refer to software that is tasked with managing data or services needed by users, such as web servers, database servers, and so on. So,\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>a server is<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0a data and service management center that is accessed by client devices such as computers, smartphones, or other devices.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\"><strong><span>Server Functions<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span>The function of the server is<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0as the heart of a network that is tasked with serving various client device needs. Servers have many crucial functions that make them the backbone of information technology operations. Here are some of the\u00a0most common\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>server functions :<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span>1. Serving Client Computer Requests<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span>Servers are designed to serve various requests from client devices. For example, when we access a website,\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>the web server<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0will receive a request from our browser, process it, and then send the requested web page data. This is the basic role of the server as a service provider needed by the client.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span>2. Storing Data or Information<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span>Servers also function as data storage centers. Various companies, organizations, or individuals use servers to store documents, files, databases, and other important information.\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>The use of servers in a network is<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0to allow users to access the data in real-time without having to store it on the client device.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span>3. Provide a Database to Run<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span>The server is also responsible for providing\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>a database<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0that can be accessed and managed by the client.\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>The database server<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0is responsible for storing, organizing, and managing data in a structured format, which can then be accessed by applications or users on the network.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span>4. Manage Data or File Transfer Traffic<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span>In a large network, the server plays a role in organizing and managing data traffic.\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>The server<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0is tasked with ensuring that data or files sent from one device to another arrive correctly and efficiently. For example, when we download a file from the internet,\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>the server<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0will send the data to our computer over the network.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span>5. Protect against criminal attacks<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span>Servers also have a very important security function. If valid, the server retrieves the requested data from storage or another resource.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span>Response Delivery<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0: After the data is retrieved or processed, the server sends a response back to the client in a form that the client device can understand, such as a web page, file, or other information.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span>Error Handling<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0: If an error occurs during the process, the server is also responsible for sending an error message or notification to the client.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span>In its operation, the server also performs other tasks such as managing network resources, maintaining security, and ensuring smooth communication processes between devices in the network.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\"><strong><span>What are the Types of Servers and Their Functions?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span>There are many\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>types of servers<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0that have specific functions in a network. Each type of server is designed to serve specific tasks according to the needs of the network and the organization that uses it. Here are some of the\u00a0most commonly used\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>types of servers :<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span>1. Web Server<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span>Web Server<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0is a type of server that functions to serve web page requests from clients, usually browsers. When we type a URL in the browser,\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>the web server<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0will process the request and send the requested web page to the user. Examples of\u00a0popular\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>web servers are Apache, Nginx, and Microsoft IIS.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span>2. Mail Server<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span>Mail Server<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0functions to handle sending and receiving emails. When we send an email,\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>the mail server<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0will send the message to the recipient&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>mail server<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0which then delivers the message to the destination email address. Examples of\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>mail servers<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0are Microsoft Exchange, Postfix, and Gmail SMTP Server.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span>3. Application Server<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span>Application Server<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0functions to run applications on a network.\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>Application servers<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0provide an environment where applications can run and be accessed by clients. Database Server<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span>Database Server<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0is a server that is specifically used to store, manage, and provide data to clients or applications.\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>Database servers<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0usually function in large networks that require large amounts of data management. Examples of\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>database servers<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0are MySQL, Oracle, and PostgreSQL.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span>5. FTP Server<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span>FTP Server<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0is used to handle file transfers between clients and servers using\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>File Transfer Protocol (FTP)<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0. This server facilitates the exchange of files in a network, either in an intranet or via the internet. Examples of\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>FTP servers<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0are FileZilla Server and ProFTPD.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span>6. DHCP Server<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span>DHCP Server<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0(Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is responsible for dynamically allocating IP addresses to devices connected to the network. Streaming Server<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span>Streaming Server<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0provides streaming content services such as video, music, or podcasts to clients. This server is responsible for managing and distributing multimedia content in real-time to users. Game Server<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span>Game Servers<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0are specifically designed to run and manage online games that are accessed by many players simultaneously. These servers are responsible for ensuring that every player has a smooth and synchronous gaming experience.
